HUBER TECHNIK IN THE EXPERIMENTAL BARN FOR YOUNG CATTLE

Over the next few years, the Bavarian State Institute for Agriculture (LfL), together with the Bavarian State Farms (BaySG), will be researching the best environment for keeping cattle as healthy and “happy” as possible.

To this end, the LfL is building an experimental barn on its site in Grub near Munich. The new building has to meet many requirements in order to provide verifiable details regarding space requirements, the layout of lying, walking and feeding areas and the climate in the barn, among other things. The emphasis is on “verifiable details”. The stable floors will play a decisive role.

Some weeks ago, our products were installed in the young cattle barn: The emission-reducing N26 ALLEY walkway flooring and the 4GS soft bedding were installed in the barn. The N26 ALLEY walkway flooring is a solid rubber floor with longitudinal grooves 1 cm deep along its entire seamless length. The intermediate tread surfaces have a slope to the channels so that liquids are quickly drained away. The result is the best possible separation of manure and urine. The formation of ammonia, and consequently the formation of nitrous oxide, is inhibited.
NEW in young cattle husbandry: Our 4GS soft bed has proven itself in dairy cattle housing for many years. The structure has remained the same for the scientifically supported testing in young cattle husbandry: Foam wrapped in foil under a 4 mm thick, fabric-reinforced seamless cover sheet. The softness of the composite foam plates was adjusted due to the lower body weight of the animals, as well as the width of the lying surface – this was reduced to 1.60 m. If the width is too wide for the size of the young animals, this results in increased soiling of the lying surface. The 4GS soft bed has been used successfully in dairy cattle farming for many years and, as a project partner , we are looking forward to the results of BaySG’s research.

Being a selected partner in such a forward-looking project makes the improvement and further development of our products more efficient. Animal welfare in agriculture should not be defined according to subjective feelings, but should be based on verifiable findings. Our aim is for Huber Technik products to combine the requirements of animal welfare with those of a professional cattle farm. We are therefore very much looking forward to the project period – we will report on all results.
